Daily Devotions: Praying Circles
From Praying Circles Around the Lives of Your Children by Mark Batterson
If we’re being completely honest, most of our prayers have as their chief objective our own personal comfort rather than God’s glory. We try to pray away every problem, but those shortsighted prayers would short-circuit God’s perfect plan. So don’t try to pray away the problem until you’ve learned the lesson God is trying to teach you. Remember, the primary purpose of prayer is not to change our circumstances. The primary purpose is to change us, to change our children. More than anything, I want my children to be conformed to the image of Christ. And that means I sometimes need to pray get them through versus get them out prayers! Instead of praying away our problems, we need to pray through them.
Praying a hedge of protection around your children isn’t praying for the path of least resistance. And it doesn’t shield them from the challenges that God will use to build their character. It’s praying for the path that will lead to God’s greatest glory, and that path has potholes called pain. But God can protect them from the plots of the Evil One. As parents, we stand on the promise that God will work all things together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). God will turn their temporary pain into eternal gain. And that’s the reward we’re after.
