Daily Devotion: Our mouths were filled with laughter…
From Man Stuff by Josh Turner
Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. -Psalm 126:2 NIV
I’ve inherited quite a lot from my daddy’s family. What I consider to be the greatest thing they’ve passed along to me besides my faith is the gift of laughter. My relatives on Daddy’s side of the family are all positive, upbeat, funny—always finding something to laugh at.
As best I can tell, it all started with Daddy’s parents. They were always clowning around, being goofy, and making fun of each other. But that’s a real gift, being able to be poked fun at and laugh rather than take offense. Daddy’s parents had that gift, and it was hilarious. That gift carried over into my family. Whenever my brother and my daddy and I get together, it’s always fun—always.
What I’ve come to see is that laughter kept my daddy’s family sane. It really did. They didn’t have an easy life; they were poor and scrapped for everything they had. Not everything in this life makes sense. But a sense of humor helps take the edge off. Not everyone seems to have that kind of sense, though. Good old-fashioned laughter seems to be a rare gift. I do believe the family that prays together stays together. I also know for a fact the family that laughs together stays sane in this crazy world.
